New Bridge on Gandak River Gets Financial Approval — Travel Distance to Gorakhpur and Kushinagar to Reduce

Development projects in Bihar have gained momentum after the completion of the state elections. One of the most significant updates comes from the proposed bridge over the Gandak River, which will connect Bettiah in Bihar to Kushinagar/Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. The project has now received financial approval, clearing the way for the tender process. The final clearance from the Union Cabinet is awaited.

A 10.5 km Long Bridge Over the Gandak River

The new bridge is planned to connect Manuapul (Bettiah) to Tiwari Patti–Seorahi (Kushinagar). The total proposed length of the bridge is 10.5 kilometres. It will be built on National Highway 727AA, which stretches 29 kilometres — 27 kilometres in Bihar and 2 kilometres in Uttar Pradesh.

Once completed, the bridge will significantly boost cross-state connectivity and reduce travel time between major towns in Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Approved in PPPAC Meeting

The project received approval during the meeting of the Public Private Partnership Appraisal Committee (PPPAC) chaired by the Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance. With financial clearance now granted, the tendering process is expected to begin soon.

Major Reduction in Travel Distance

The new bridge will drastically reduce travel distance and time between Bettiah and key cities in Uttar Pradesh:

Bettiah to Gorakhpur (current): ~160 km

After bridge: ~125 km

Bettiah to Kushinagar (current): ~103 km

After bridge: ~73 km

This means a 30–40 km distance reduction, leading to lower fuel consumption, faster travel, and smoother inter-state movement.

Boost to Local Development

The bridge is expected to enhance economic activities, agriculture transport, trade, and tourism across the border regions of Bettiah, West Champaran, Kushinagar, and Gorakhpur. Towns like Lauriya, Ramnagar, and Seorahi will particularly benefit from improved road access.

This project will mark a major milestone in strengthening Bihar–UP infrastructure connectivity. The execution phase now depends on the Union Cabinet’s final approval.
