Political Storm in Bengal After ED Raids TMC IT Cell Chief’s Residence and Office

Kolkata:

West Bengal witnessed another major political upheaval on Wednesday after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out raids at the residence and office of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) IT Cell chief, triggering high-voltage political drama across the state.

The raids were conducted early in the morning at the TMC leader’s house on Loudon Street and his office located in Salt Lake, Kolkata. The action is linked to an ongoing investigation into the alleged coal smuggling and money laundering case, which has already drawn national attention.

Mamata Banerjee Rushes to the Spot

As soon as news of the ED action broke, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee rushed to the site. She first visited the residence and later the Salt Lake office, where she questioned the legitimacy of the raids. Addressing the media, Banerjee alleged that the central agencies were being misused for political vendetta ahead of upcoming elections.

She accused the Centre of intimidating opposition leaders and attempting to destabilize the state government through investigative agencies.

Documents and Digital Evidence Seized

Sources in the ED revealed that several crucial files, digital devices, and financial documents were seized during the operation. These materials are believed to be connected to the alleged routing of illegal funds generated through coal smuggling.

The agency suspects that the proceeds of the crime were laundered through a complex network and may have been used for political financing and election campaign management.

Raids at Ten Locations

Officials confirmed that raids were conducted at ten different locations simultaneously as part of the same investigation. The ED claims that the money trail leads beyond individuals to organised networks involved in the coal smuggling syndicate.

Political Reactions Intensify

The ruling TMC termed the ED action “politically motivated” and accused the Centre of harassment. Opposition parties, however, welcomed the probe and said that if no wrongdoing had occurred, the party should cooperate fully with the investigation.

What Lies Ahead

With the ED continuing its probe, more names are expected to surface in the coming days. The case has already turned into a flashpoint in Bengal’s political landscape, and its outcome could have far-reaching implications.
